We’d like to wish congratulations to Raj Lalwani, David Jordan, and the rest of the Social Calendar team on their recent acquisition by Walmart, as first reported earlier this week by TechCrunch. Social Calendar was one of the first customers of our User Intelligence platform, and while we’re not saying that they got acquired because they used our insights to optimize their performance, well, it probably didn’t hurt either. But in all seriousness, Social Calendar’s success is owed to the fact that they have an innovative product, a smart team and the right positioning in a very hot space.
Social Calendar is a leading app on Facebook that lets users get birthday and holiday reminders by email and text messaging, and to post personalized photo cards and other virtual greetings on friends’ Facebook Walls on their birthdays. The app was launched in February, 2008, and since then it has grown to 16 million users worldwide and 1 million unique monthly active users on Facebook. In total more than 110 million birthdays, holidays and other special occasions have been added by users, and 10 million email reminders are sent each month.
It’s easy to see why Social Calendar would be appealing to a company like Walmart, which has made a series of smart e-commerce moves of late, acquiring companies that help add personalization, mobile, social and other functionality to the shopping process. Social Calendar joins other Walmart acquisitions including Kosmix, Small Society and OneRiot to help the retail behemoth transition into the world of social commerce.
Congrats Raj and David, and good luck with the next chapter!
